Sony posted its Q1 financial report yesterday, and the numbers aren’t looking good.

Sales in the Game sector sunk 14.5 percent year-on-year, culminating in a loss of 3.5 billion yen (£28.69 million), compared to 2011’s 4.1 billion yen profit.

The company’s refusal to release sales figures for the Vita does not bode well for the handheld, considering combined sales of the PSP and Vita were lower this year than last year’s PSP sales alone in software and hardware. Combined hardware sales reached 1.4 million, down from 2011’s 1.8 million, while software fell from 6.6 million to 5.8 million.

Sony also combined PS2 and PS3 sales, which were down 400,000 units to 2.8 million. Software sales for home platforms also saw a slump from 27.6 million to 20.1 million.

As a result of the poor numbers, Sony has lowered its forecasts for the fiscal year (ending March 2013), expecting a “significant decrease” in operating income. Sony’s original expectation of 16 million combined PSP and Vita units sold has been scaled back to 12 million, and the company expects “flat” year-on-year sales.
