The introduction of Shanghai’s free trade zone, which enables the sale of games consoles in China, could represent a huge untapped market for video game giants, SCE president Andrew House has told MCV.

“One of the success stories, not just for ourselves but for the whole games business, has been our ability to open up new geographies for video games over the last five years,” House explained.

“The PS2 success was achieved with Latin America being almost a non-existent market for consoles. We are seeing finally China opening up to consoles with the establishment of the free trade zone in Shanghai. So there are opportunities for new markets that we haven’t tapped into.”

China’s video games market was valued at £8 billion in 2013 thanks to thriving online gaming. The introduction of a free trade zone will allow the likes of Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft to begin claiming a foothold in the territory.

In reaction to the news, Nintendo’s shares jumped 11 per cent to 15,850 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, reports the BBC.
