Sony has been ordered to pay Immersion Corp a quarterly license fee for use of their force feedback technology. This technology has been in PlayStation controllers since the introduction of the Dual Shock that launched in Europe at around the same time as the original Gran Turismo.

Sony has already been stung for $82 million in damages from a lawsuit dating back to last September. On top of this one off payment, Sony is now required to pay 1.37% license fee based on sales of the PlayStation console and the videogames that were named in the September 2004 lawsuit. While no exact figure can be given, this is expected to cost Sony approximately $27 million each year.

Microsoft has also been on the end of a lawsuit from Immersion, but the newcomer to the videogames industry decided to settle out of court in July 2003, agreeing a deal with Immersion for use of their patented technology.
