Sega's Takashi Iizuka has revealed that Sonic Mania 2 is not in the pipeline, feeling the team has done all they can for the retro-fuelled project following the upcoming re-release of Sonic Mania this summer.
This is despite the fact the 2D platformer was, you know, probably the best thing that's come out of the franchise in the past ten years, not only restoring consumer faith in the brand but also proving unequivocally that the Blue Blur should really leave the whole 3D thing to Mario and chums. Apparently, Sega feels differently (and seemingly isn't interesting in making money either).
Speaking during an interview with Famitsu magazine (via Siliconera), Iizuka poured cold water on the hopes of a follow-up:
'Maybe the next one will be Sonic Mania’ (Dash) then [laughs]. Jokes aside, with the release of the physical version in Sonic Mania Plus, it feels like we did everything we could for the Sonic Mania project,' he said.
Sonic Mania was released last summer to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the badnick-bashing series for PlayStation 4, PC, Switch, and Xbox One. Sonic Mania Plus will include a bunch of additional content for the game when it launches in stores on July 17.
