As the latest venture from HoYoverse, Zenless Zone Zero has launched to quick success with many heaping praise on the setting, characters, and combat. One problem that is gaining attention in the community, however, is the clear lack of male characters in the game at the moment. Granted, it launched in early July and hasn’t even reached patch 1.1 yet, but just looking at the numbers is enough to show you that out of the 17 characters available in 1.0, only four of them are male.

While Zenless Zone Zero is currently having some issues with its Snake Duel event, it has easily hit and surpassed its revenue goal. By all accounts, the game is a huge success and it’s easy to see why so many people love it. With the upcoming Zhu Yuan banner in patch 1.0, we’re seeing the latest limited S-Rank character added to the game.

As more content is yet to be added to Zenless Zone Zero, fans are starting to notice the ratio of male to female characters, and it’s something some want to see remedied with more male characters added to the roster in the future.

On the Zenless Zone Zero subreddit, OP Background-Owl-918 shared a post titled, ‘Am I the only one?‘ explaining their thoughts about the current roster and how there are so few male characters to choose from. It’s important to note that the post doesn’t criticise that there are too many female characters, but that they ‘would like to see more male characters’, that have more care put into their attack animations.

The post goes on to say: “But feels like they put more work into the female character animations that then male, though Koleda, Corin and Piper’s animation sort of suck but not as bad as Ben and Anton’s”.

To put it simply, HoYoverse definitely has a preference when it comes to characters in these gacha games. One person’s comment on the Reddit post might indicate why this is, saying: “I would like more males, it’s like every faction it’s 3 females and 1 male. But I get it, females always sell more”. They also point out that this ratio is the ‘only really negative complaint’ they have with ZZZ.

It’s an interesting point they raise because it is clear that this game favours female characters over men with what has currently been released. In HoYoverse’s other games, this is something of a trend. Honkai Star Rail launched with 23 characters, eight of which were male. In Genshin, 22 characters were on the initial 1.0 roster, with seven of them being male.
