Tim Shafer and his team at Double Fine are currently hard at work on a series of smaller-scale downloadable games – the first was Costume Quest, to be followed soon by Stacking – but that doesn’t mean he’s forgotten about his much-loved platforming adventure Psychonauts.

Asked by VideoGamer.com at last week’s THQ showcase in New York if Psychonauts is likely to happen, he indicated that one day fans will get their wish.

“It depends how much money you brought to the interview, so if you have a few million,” he joked. “We own the rights to it so as long as we stick around … eventually, you know, I’m sure we’ll get it done before the sun explodes.

“We would love to do it, we would love to do it.”

Psychonauts is regarded by many as one of the finest games of our time, so news of Schafer’s interest in returning to the IP is sure to excite a great many gamers.

Now it’s a case of waiting for it to happen. How long does the sun have left?
