ElSPA have today announced that the latest in the Grand Theft Auto series has officially taken its place as the UKs fastest ever selling game. Chart-Track sales figures reveal that the game has been flying off the shelves with over 1 million copies of the game sold in the first 9 days of release. This destroys previous contender GTA: Vice City’s effort which managed over 250,000 sales in a comparative period of time.

Roger Bennet of ELSPA commented, “This is a magnificent achievement and equates to a staggering estimated value of more than £35 million. The entire Grand Theft Auto series has been a phenomenal success worldwide, generating sales of more three and half million units in the UK alone. But best of all, this series is home grown, developed right here in UK.”.

Sales of Rockstar North’s title are likely to continue strongly over the next few weeks despite the usual festive competition and, if previous GTA sales are anything to go by, is likely to remain in the charts for months to come.

“What has been so satisfying is the exceptionally high level of awareness for both GTA and video games in general, in both media coverage and the public consciousness. Perhaps for the first time, we have seen the kind of buzz which one would normally only associate with the release of a blockbuster movie, endorsing once again the increasing economic, cultural and mass market impact of interactive home entertainment.”, added Bennet.
