Sony has today announced that 580,000 units of its new PSP have been sold in Japan in the two weeks since the slimmer and lighter unit went on sale on September 20. This figure includes 77,000 units of the Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core special edition PSP which was launched a week prior to the standard Slim and Lite.

Sony says the sales are stronger with the Slim and Lite than they were in the same time period when the original PSP launched back in December 2004.

Char track recently reported that the launch of the Slim and Lite has increased UK sales of the PSP fourfold.
