At least, according to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata it isn’t. Whilst talking to journalists in Japan the boss let his feelings loose concerning Sony’s foray into the handheld market, stating that the PSP would simply alienate possible new gamers rather than attracting them.

Obviously he then went on to say how the DS would attract new players – but if he didn’t, he would be a pretty shoddy President, to be fair. Iwata applied the common argument that increasingly complex machines and games scare off a great deal of potential consumers, and that by simply upping the technological stakes at a graphical level won’t help matters. He said: “PSP has been created with the assumption that the golden success formula is still working. We don’t believe that. We’re making every effort so that people will say we were right.”

With the undeniably popular DS already making waves sales-wise, it will be interesting to see if Iwata’s comments hold true in future.
