PlayStation 4 games will not include support for 4K resolution “initially”, SCEE Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny has told VideoGamer.com.

Instead, the console will restrict use of the ‘Ultra HD’ tech to video and still images, with games rendered at 1080p.

It isn’t yet clear whether the console will upscale existing 1080p Blu-ray discs to 4K, or whether native 4K video files will be required.

4K support had long-been rumoured to be included in PlayStation 4. The technology lets supported TVs display at 3840 × 2160 resolution – four times the amount of pixels as 1080p.

Sony announced PlayStation 4 in New York last night. The console is due to go on sale this Christmas.
