PlayStation 3’s latest 4.45 firmware update is rendering consoles unusable, according to various user reports.

While the problem doesn’t appear to be affecting everybody, some PS3 users have reported that their console failed to boot after installing the update, with online speculation suggesting that the issue may be limited to those who have installed hard drives bigger than 500GB.

The update, which was released last night, is supposed to add an option to disable trophy notifications and improve system stability.

We’ve contacted Sony to find out what’s causing the issue and ask how those affected can get their console back up and running. For now though, avoid updating your PS3 to 4.45.
