Via the UMD Passport Program it will possible to purchase downloadable versions of your UMD games for PS Vita at a discounted price of between £4 and £12, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has announced.

You’ll need to download a UMD Registration Application from the PS Store to your PSP. Once loaded insert the UMD you wish to register, then follow the instructions to register the UMD game with your PSN account. The game will then be made available to download at the discounted price shown.

However, UMD Passport supports only around 200 games from 40 publishers – if your game isn’t on the list then you won’t be able to get a downloadable version.

PSP games on PS Vita will feature a digital manual and the option to toggle bilinear filtering and change settings for the right analogue stick. Existing game saves will also be transferable.

It’s not clear what happens to the UMD once the digital version has been bought and downloaded, but presumably Sony won’t be able to prevent the game from being sold on.

Expect a similar service to launch in time for the PS Vita’s UK launch in February.
