The PS Vita and PSP sold a combined 600,000 units worldwide during the months of April, May and June 2013, Sony has revealed as part of its first quarter financial year 2013 results.

This compares badly with the 1.4 million combined units sold in the same quarter last year. Sony, however, remains confident it will shift five million handhelds in the year.

Sony doesn’t offer a breakdown of how each handheld performed.

Elsewhere the PS3 and PS2 combined (although the PS2’s contribution must only be small) shifted 1.1 million units, down from 2.8 in the same quarter of 2012.

All this, together with costs associated with the PS4, resulted in Sony’s gaming division reporting a loss of $149 million.
