Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced it plans to update the PlayTV accessory later this year, although it’s keeping the “exciting new features” under wraps for now.

“I don’t want to give too much away and spoil the surprise but a little hint to one of the new features is that PlayTV will have links to the world’s most popular social network site, Facebook,” wrote James Thorpe, PlayStation Network Product Manager, on the PlayStation Blog. “Other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features will also be included in the update.”

An update to support the newly launched Freeview HD seems unlikely – the service uses DVB-T2 which is incompatible with PlayTV’s DVB-T. What seems more likely is some kind of series link functionality (an improvement over the repeat recording functionality available now) and tweaks to the speed of the service.
