PlayStation has quietly announced it’ll be discontinuing its player Accolades system in a few months on the PS5.

The revelation came through an update to the Discontinued PlayStation apps, features and services page as spotted by Push Square. The update reads as follows. “In fall of 2022, the Accolades feature on PlayStation 5 will no longer be supported. The feature hasn’t seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts. We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another.”

The Accolades feature was a way for PlayStation users to offer feedback on their fellow players. Following a game, they had the option to award badges to their teammates and opponents which would give them an overall Accolade score. Players were rated across three main categories. Helpful, Welcoming and Good Leader. It was a decent way to be able to see random players behaviour patterns at a glance. However, players could only give one accolade per match, and they couldn’t give them to friends to prevent them taking advantage of the system.

Of course, the idea was to encourage friendly behaviour on the platform. However, it seems not enough players took advantage. It’s certainly a shame that an initiative to try and promote more positive interactions didn’t take off just a week removed from PlayStation Studio Bungie making the decision to reduce communication from fans after toxic behaviour online including threats. It’s not clear at the time of writing if anything will take its place to encourage a better gaming environment.

In the meantime, though the Accolades feature may be going, PlayStation 5 will be getting 1440p support and Gamelists in the very near future.
