Sony plans to promote and sell super high resolution 4K televisions using the PlayStation 4, reports Yahoo.
According to an anonymous source, the PS4 will support 4K resolution playback, and Sony hopes the console will help popularise 4K televisions much as PS3 was a major player in Blu-ray winning out over HD-DVD.
Sony hopes the ability to play 4K resolution movies and games will tempt consumers into upgrading their already high definition televisions.
4K supports a resolution of up to 4096 x 3072, and unlike 720p and 1080p takes its name from the horizontal resolution, not the vertical.
Sony plans to roll out the 80-inch XBR LED television set with 4K resolution and is already selling 4K Blu-ray players.
Whilst we could believe the PS4 will be able to play 4K movie files, we don’t see any way the step up in power will be enough to jump from predominantly 720p games to 4K.
