Another Soulslike entry entitled Phantom Blade 0 has been revealed through the May 2023 PlayStation showcase. Exhibiting all the typical hallmarks of every head-scratchingly difficult FromSoftware game in history, this should be another action adventure installment that will have players constantly mashing their dodge buttons.
The preview displayed plenty of the game’s adrenaline-filled scenes as the protagonist could often be seen faced with several demon-like creatures. Based on what’s been shown so far, Phantom Blade 0’s setting seems to take place in a dystopian version of China as evidenced by the Chinese Southern Lion-inspired boss that was depicted in one of the video’s earlier scenes.
In addition to the frighteningly unique creatures you’ll inevitably be faced with, there were also plenty of minion-like enemies wielding katanas shown throughout the sneak peek. These combatants will likely be the ones you see frequently throughout the game and they may even be the frustrating cause of your demise at some point in your adventure.
The game’s dreary setting and eerie characters also make it seem like Phantom Blade 0 will have some horror elements to it that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The lady in white shown at the two-minute mark of the trailer in particular may end up being nightmare fuel for some unsuspecting players that end up facing her in the game.
With that said, Phantom Blade 0 is shaping up to be an exciting new installment in the Soulslike genre that seems to be separating itself from its counterparts with its unique mix of horror and thrilling combat. Only time will tell if it can live up to the hype drummed up by this in-depth preview, but for now we’ll just have to wait until S-GAME and Cruelman Studio reveal more details on this upcoming action title.
