Blizzard has announced a new feature coming to Overwatch, which is set to shake up matchmaking and player character choice in its popular online hero shooter.

Called 'Role Queue' the feature will now ask players to pick a role before joining a match, and then they'll only be able to pick heroes from the role they've selected. Every team will be made up of two of each role – Support, Damage and Tank. This will be in effect in Competitive Play and Quick Play.

As part of this change, your matchmaking skill rating under the new system will now have a seperate value for each role, so you'll be able to see which roles you're stronger or weaker at, and be able to pick a role – or train up better in one you're not as good at – appropriately.

Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan explains fully the new feature in the latest Developer Update, which we've posted below and they explain they hope it'll improve match quality and give players more control over their play experience. The Role Queue feature is going live on the PC test servers now, and once done there it'll roll out to the live servers and eventually the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game too.

Overwatch is currently in the midst of its third Summer Games event, which kicked off this week.
