Overwatch 2: Invasion is just around the corner and a majority of the game’s heroes are set to receive some pretty substantial changes when the new Season releases. These include the likes of Cassidy, Soldier 76, Orisa, Lifeweaver and more. However, Mercy seems to be the hero players are taking note of as her damage boost is set to receive a nerf in next season’s patch notes.
Speaking in a Director’s Take blog post, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller provided a brief look into some of the major changes players could expect from the Hero roster come the release of Overwatch 2: Invasion on August 10. Mercy is one of the hero changes planned with Keller noting that the hero’s damage boost is set to receive a nerf from 30% to 25% in the game’s next update. Keller admitted that this change would be a “contentious topic,” but he noted that the Overwatch 2 team are “doing [their] best to be receptive to the various community opinions.”
The announced change certainly is a “contentious topic” as despite the numerous changes to half of the game’s roster being announced players focused in on Keller’s statements relating to Mercy. While Keller noted that all of the changes mentioned throughout the Director’s Take blog post were to address balancing issues some players simply aren’t buying it. Many players, such as igotshadowbaned, are convinced Blizzard has decided to make this change to appeal to community outcry as opposed to addressing balancing issues. They said, “It reads to me that they’re making the change out of community outcry rather than balance.”
However, some players were quick to call out some of the community’s complaints surrounding this change with one player saying, “Outside of those who play Mercy only to pocket their friend, nobody plays Mercy because of the damage boost. Movement is what makes Mercy fun, not holding a beam on an ally.”
The Director’s Take has certainly divided a number of fans but it should be noted that there were a number of other big announcements confirmed during the post. While Sombra is set to receive a few new changes in the upcoming season, the following season will see a much larger rework for the character including a brand-new ability. The Overwatch 2 team are also aiming to make sure the new season’s hero is powerful enough on launch for players to want to play her for her value to the team as opposed to because she’s new.
