A PlayStation Plus subscription will not be required to play No Man's Sky online, Sony has confirmed.

Speaking to Game Informer, Sony explained: "PS Plus won't be a requirement to play online, however you will need to [be] connected to the internet for your discoveries to register with the universal atlas."

No Man's Sky is expected to make heavy use of online functionality, allowing players to name planets and alien species they discover in a single online universe. The opportunities for multiplayer, however, may be fairly limited. In fact, as Game Informer points out, Hello Games describes the game as a "single-player" title on its Steam page.

No Man's Sky launches in the UK on August 10 on PS4, and August 12 on PC.
