Shigeru Miyamoto, generally considered to be God by rampant fanboys (more referred to as ‘a ruddy good designer’ by normal people), has revealed in a recent Famitsu interview that the Nintendo DS will be expanding on its wireless networking capabilities to include online play, with the handheld leading Nintendo’s move into online gaming – other systems will reportedly follow in the next three to four years (still no word on the GC going online, mind).

The news comes as a bit of a U-turn on Nintendo’s part, as the company have rather vocally opposed the move to online gaming, claiming the mainstream market isn’t ready for such a thing. Miyamoto’s belief that the online world will invade the homes of the mass market in the next three to four years ties in with the big N’s plans – almost as if they’re planning around the predictions…

Though no online titles have been confirmed as of yet, the rumour mill is churning out pointy fingers that point towards a title being made by Square Enix – possibly a handheld version of the GameCube title Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, though nothing has been confirmed (or denied) at this point in time.

Hopefully more news will make itself known in the coming weeks, stick to Pro-G to see what develops.
