Nintendo Switch production targets have been doubled from eight million to 16 million as a result of stronger than expected demand for the system, people informed on the matter have told the Wall Street Journal.

Nintendo believes it can sell 10 million units in the financial year beginning April 1. Should Nintendo be able to sell through all its Switch units, the hybrid platform would eclipse the lifetime sales of Wii U (13.5 million) in just one year.

Nintendo expects it will sell two million Switch units by the end of March, with early estimates placing sales are around 1.5 million for the launch week.

PS4 sold more than 13.5 million units in its first year.
