Nintendo, or more specifically the Nintendo DS, can do no wrong at the moment. The dual screen handheld is the dominant platform in Japan, and sales across Europe and North America are also strong. This success has helped Nintendo post a 54.35bn Yen (£242.8 million) net profit for the period between April 2006 and September 2006.
The continued success of the DS, 10.9 million units sold worldwide between April and September, has lead Nintendo to raise its sales forecast from 17m to 20m DS units for the year long period ending March 2007.
Although there appears to be nothing of any real quality coming to the DS in the remainder of 2006, Yoshi’s Island aside, the cheap price of the DS together with a collection of easily accessible titles should ensure it has a strong Christmas period in Europe.
