The Nintendo Switch 2 has been lambasted for its higher-than-usual price for a Nintendo console, alongside the price of its first-party software. Despite this the new console is matching the company’s predictions of being the biggest console launch of all time, and Nintendo isn’t backing down from its pricing decisions.
Furukawa discusses Nintendo Switch 2 price
In a recent investors call, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explaiend that the company believes “the pricing of Nintendo Switch 2 is appropriate for the gaming experience it offers”.
The president of the Japanese console giant explained that the company has “incorporated various features into Nintendo Switch 2” to offset the eye-watering price. However, the company hopes that those who can’t afford the new console will still be able to “engage with Nintendo characters” in other forms.
“It is true that Nintendo Switch 2 has a higher price point than our past gaming systems,” the Nintendo boss confirmed. “We are creating various opportunities outside of our gaming systems for young children to engage with Nintendo characters and game worlds, with one of the ultimate goals being that they will eventually play on our gaming systems. We are closely monitoring to what degree the price of the system might become a barrier.”
Nintendo has been moving towards more multi-media projects in recent years, including the extremely popular Super Mario Bros Movie. Not only is a sequel for that popular animated film currently in the works, but a Legend of Zelda movie is also in active development.
Additionally, the Nintendo brand has expanded into massively successful theme parks with three locations in Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Epic Universe. A new Super Nintendo World location is also opening in Singapore.
Additionally, Nintendo explained that they are “still developing new titles for Nintendo Switch”, allowing the older console to stay supported to offset the cost of upgrading. Additionally, the president explained that the “longer a platform remains active, the more opportunities there are for consumers to pick up software”.
At the time of writing, Nintendo Switch 2 hardware is selling extraordinarily well, but third-party software isn’t. Nevertheless, first-party software (which is just Mario Kart World at the moment) is selling well.
