The amazing Nintendo DS cult-classic mystery game Hotel Dusk: Room 215 could have a remake in development for the Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2. In a surprise filing, Nintendo has filed a new trademark for the brilliant point-and-click adventure game via the Japan Platform for Patent Information.
Discovered by GameSpark (thanks, VGC), this marks the first time the game’s Western name has been officially trademarked in Japan. At the time of writing, the company still holds trademarks for the game’s Japanese title, Wish Room, and it’s sequel Last Window: Japan Platform for Patent Information.
Could Hotel Dusk have a remake in development?
The original Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and its sequel Last Window: The Secret of Cape West were developed by the now-defunct studio Cing. While the studio may be deceased, Nintendo recently released extensive remakes of the team’s Another Code games for the Nintendo Switch console.
Prior to Nintendo’s release of Another Code: Recollection, Nintendo filed a trademark for the game’s Western name and logo five years before release. With the company now filing an official trademark for Hotel Dusk: Room 215, we could be a few years away from a surprise remake.
When Another Code: Recollection hit shelves, many fans of Cing’s studio asked for remakes of the studio’s other titles. With Nintendo planning to support the original Nintendo Switch even after the release of the very popular Nintendo Switch 2, this could be an easy cross-gen release.
However, there are some inherent issues with remaking the DS game for modern platforms. On release, Hotel Dusk made extensive use of the Nintendo DS hardware with the game played in portrait mode with players holding the device like a book. If the game is remade for Switch, or Switch 2, it would be a very different experience.
Nevertheless, it would be great to some Hotel Dusk: Room 215 return to modern audiences in some form. As a fantastic visual novel mystery, fans deserve the series to get a full remake.
“If you are looking for action then try elsewhere,” our original review from 2007 reads. “But if you fancy the old-fashioned pleasures of a great point ‘n’ click, then snap this up now, and enjoy one of the sharpest, coolest worlds seen in gaming for a long time. Just don’t forget to save every other minute.”
