Want to channel your inner Bob Probert in NHL 23? Dave “Tiger” Williams? Tie Domi?
NHL 23 fights are a great way to release some inner frustration during a particularly frustrating game or maybe grab a quick boost for your team. Luckily for you, losing a fight doesn’t mean you’re risking your career like many of the NHL’s tough guys.
Fights in the NHL have come a long way since the games of the 90s and 2000s. Gone are the days of two plays with a Street Fighter-style health bar looking like they are throwing their hands into the other’s chest.
If you’re looking to start a fight in NHL 23, here’s the most reliable way to do so.
NHL 23: How To Start A Fight

- Double tap the triangle / Y button at the face-off circle before the puck drops
- After the whistle goes – press the triangle button
- Slapshot at the goalie after the whistle
Attempting to play the puck after pressing the triangle or Y button may disable the fight. So if you’re going to go for the fight in NHL 23, go for it.
You also have a chance to start a fight by taking a slapshot at the goalie after the whistle and then pressing triangle or Y when an opponent comes near you. You’ll likely draw a crowd for doing so, just like in the NHL.
Big open ice hits or dirty hits from behind along the boards have a chance to trigger an opponent’s response as well in NHL 23. If they do, press the triangle or Y button to initiate a fight.
Winning a fight has a chance to boost your team’s energy and morale. But be careful who you choose to take into a fight as losing the fight can have the opposite effect on your team. Especially if you choose to try the slapshot after the whistle method, be careful who you have taking that shot. Seeing Conner McDavid in a fight is not likely to be pretty.
To get a good feel for who you might want to use when starting fights, we recommend for fans to scope out the fighting ratings of some of the best defenders in the new game.
