So a good coaching staff will lead to higher ratings for your players. Taking the effort to hire great coaches will have a big impact on improving your team over the long term.
Okay, so you’re convinced. You want the next Stan Bowman or Don Cherry behind the bench. But how do you actually hire a coach in NHL 23?

NHL 23: How To Hire Coaches
First and foremost, there are some hiring windows you need to keep in mind in NHL 23. You can hire and fire coaches like the New York Islanders – 13 coaches in 20 years – from the free agency period until the postseason begins. After the postseason begins you won’t be able to hire coaches again if you fire them. So hold your horses until the free agency period begins the following season.
To hire a coach for your budding dynasty in NHL 23, head to your team management screen. There should be a hire staff menu item there. Also, by pressing the menu or options on Playstation, there should be an option to go straight to the hire staff screen. Under manage contracts, there will also be a hire staff menu option.
If you aren’t able to hire any coaches, you may have to double check whether you set the AI to handle this for you. In the settings menu, make sure you have auto staff management set to off or you won’t be able to hire new coaches.
When looking for a new coach to hire, focus on the overall rating more than chemistry. The best of both worlds is going to be better. But if you’re forced to choose one over the other, the overall rating will have a larger impact on your team.
