Dead By Daylight has had some great collaborations in the past, and Year 9 has been fantastic with Dungeons and Dragons, Tomb Raider, and CastleVania. While these crossovers were excellent, we are still set to receive one more licensed killer. This will be the last baddie for Year 9, and it seems that the next DBD licensed killer may prove controversial.
There is a lot happening in the world of Dead By Daylight before the end of 2024. There is mid-Chapter 33.5 right around the corner, and the October roadmap reveals skin collections for this year’s Halloween event. We are also getting the return of 2v8 in November, and it seems that the Chapter 34 killer has leaked online.
Chapter 34 in December will be entirely original, so we have to wait until March for the next licensed killer to make their arrival. Nothing has been announced yet, but recent speculation suggests they may not be a popular choice.
Next Dead By Daylight licensed killer is “out of the box”
Dead By Daylight YouTuber, The King, has conducted their yearly interview with DBD’s game director, Mathieu Cote. The interview hasn’t been uploaded onto YouTube yet, so we need to wait to see what what was asked and what answers were given.
Although the interview hasn’t been uploaded as of writing, it’s reportedly been discussed during one of The King’s streams on Twitch. According to a screenshot shared on the LeaksDBD subreddit, King has said Mathieu believes “people are gonna b***h about the next chapter but it’s gonna be out of the box”.
Now, this is just second hand information. We don’t know exactly what the game director said nor the phrasing they used. However, this at least suggests that the killer may be a controversial and unpopular choice.
No leaks have revealed the licensed killer yet, but fans have guessed Kayako from The Grudge because Ruthless teased the killer is “more popular in an Eastern country” and is from a movie after 2000. The first Ju-On movie (Ju-On: The Curse) came out February-March 2000 in Japan, and Kayako is definitely way more popular in Japan despite also receiving western adaptations. Arriving as a killer in March would also be timely with the Jun-On series celebrating its 25th anniversary.
If we dismiss the clues from Ruthless, then the next DBD licensed killer could be anyone. However, expecting complaints and the use of “out of the box” suggests it is most likely not Jason from Friday the 13th as that is a killer the entire community have heavily requested. It could possibly be Art The Clown as they are joining Call of Duty and Terrifier has been part of DBD surveys in the past.
It’s also possible that “out of the box” means it’s not strictly horror related. Tomb Raider and Dungeons and Dragons have themes of horror, same with CastleVania, but they are not staples of the horror genre. Perhaps we could be getting something similar which would align with the licensed crossovers for Year 9 so far.
While the March license remains a mystery, we do know in Year 10 we are finally getting DBD x FNAF. In addition, Gumpy has previously suggested there plans for The Walking Dead, and the creators of a massive horror game have revealed they want a DBD chapter.
