SpongeBob SquarePants has been around for nearly 25 years now. It’s one of the most iconic animated series of all time, and there have been a few good video games since the show’s inception. A leak has possibly revealed a new open-world SpongeBob SquarePants video game, and, aside from being open-world, a key titbit is that the yellow sponge is not the main playable character.

The last SpongeBob game to come out was the Cosmic Shake in 2023. This was a surprisingly excellent platformer with a lot of charm and love from developer, Purple Lamp. Before that we had the Rehydrated remake of the beloved Battle For Bikini Bottom, and other highlights in the SpongeBob video game library include the movie as well as Revenge of the Flying Dutchman.

SpongeBob SquarePants video games always have a lot of charm and they are occasionally excellent platformers for people of all ages. No new game has officially been announced, but a leak suggests an open-world adventure in Bikini Bottom is planned to come out with Patrick Star taking the spotlight.

Leak reveals new SpongeBob SquarePants game starring Patrick

As shared on the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, a new SpongeBob SquarePants video game starring Patrick has possibly been leaked. The leak originates from listings seen on gaming website igabiba, but the page has been taken down.

Fortunately, Twitter user joshnamesnotjo1 was able to capture screenshots of the leaked box art along with the leaked description. The boxart suggests it is called SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star game, and the leaked description said the following:

“Patrick fans, your time has come – and Bikini Bottom is your open-world playground! You can skydive with just a parasol (or nothing at all), search for buried treasure in the Dump, or release the rage in Mrs. Puff’s Rage Room. Use almost any item you find, – from the reef blower to a paint can, – to make the world more Patrick. And take on challenges only Patrick would attempt, set by up SpongeBob, Sandy Cheeks, Mr. Krabs, and more.

So become the Star of the show, put your silliest ideas into action, and enjoy the physics-based chaos that unfolds all around you!”

The description “Bikini Bottom is your open-world playground” is exciting as we haven’t had a SpongeBob open-world game. Battle for Bikini Bottom had a hub where you could explore the insides of buildings such as SpongeBob’s iconic pineapple home, the Krusty Krab, Squidward’s house, the Chum Bucket, and more, but it was a hub that really wasn’t big.

Unfortunately, while the prospect of an open-world is exciting, the box art suggests Outright Games is the publisher rather than THQ Nordic. This means the game isn’t developed by Purple Lamp, who fans understandably want to see more from following the brilliance of Cosmic Shake.

As of writing, this is merely a leak and is not official. If the leak is true, it’s possible an announcement could be made at Gamescom happening later this month.

In more gaming news, August 2024 is a huge month for video game releases as there is the release date for Black Myth Wukong and the release date for Star Wars Outlaws.
