Netflix & CD Projekt Red have dropped the first videos for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a new anime based on RPG Cyberpunk 2077.

The show won’t follow the characters from the games, alas. Instead it’ll focus on a pair of protagonists named David and Lucy. The former is a street kid, who’s trying to survive the harsh world of Night City. In this technology and body-modification obsessed city, he decides to become an Edgerunner – a mercenary outlaw.

The project was first announced back in June of 2020, even before the game had released. Developers CD Projekt Red haven’t just handed this off, however, with members of the creative team heavily involved with the anime series. They’ve worked with Japanese animation company Studio Trigger on the show, who produced the Little Witch Academia and Kill la Lill series. There’s even a score from Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka.

You can expect 10 episodes in this standalone series when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners launches in September of 2022 on Netflix. You can check out a trailer, behind-the-scenes look and a brief-but-bloody clip from the Cyberpunk anime below. Meanwhile, now that Cyberpunk 2077‘s next-gen patches are in the wild, work is currently in progress on the game’s first expansion – but don’t expect to see it before 2023.
