Nintendo has announced that it will be dropping the ability to watch Netflix from its older consoles Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Wii U from June 30, 2021.

As spotted by Nintendo Life, the Nintendo US support website confirms that the apps were removed from the Nintendo eShop on both consoles on December 31, although existing users can still download the apps should they need to. However, from the end of June it will become impossible to watch Netflix on either system.

Despite this move, there’s still no word or sign of a Netflix app for Nintendo Switch. Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said back in 2017 that the company was in talks with Hulu, Amazon and Netflix to bring their apps to the current console, but as of the start of 2021 only Hulu in the US currently has an official app on the Nintendo eShop.

It’s certainly a shame if nothing else, with the streaming giant making big strides into video game inspired content of late, including the very successful The Witcher series and projects based on Resident Evil and Assassin’s Creed both in the works to name but a few.
