After the critical and commercial failure of Writer/Director M. Night Shyamalan’s live action movie adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” back in 2010. Fans the world over of the beloved Nickelodeon animated series were left disappointed and heartbroken at an adaptation that, beyond its title and character names, bore very little resemblance to the acclaimed animated series.
Now, with lessons hopefully learnt from the failures of the previous adaptation attempt. Netflix have commissioned a brand new live action adaptation of “Avatar” that is set to be a series rather than a movie, in order to allow for greater fidelity to the storytelling and scope of the animated series.

With the series’ Showrunner/Executive Producer, and Writer, Albert Kim, explaining that two of his goals for this new series, and some of the reasons he wished to be involved in the series were to “establish a new benchmark in representation and bring in a whole new generation of fans. This was a chance to showcase Asian and Indigenous characters as living, breathing people. Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in.
I also knew what I didn’t want to do. I didn’t want to change things for the sake of change. I didn’t want to modernize the story, or twist it to fit current trends. Aang is not going to be a gritty antihero. Katara is not going to get curtain bangs. (I was briefly tempted to give Sokka a TikTok account though. Think of the possibilities.)“
