2006 was a good year for the Xbox 360. After finally breaking free from its stuttering start – console shortages and a barren release schedule – Microsoft’s next-gen machine got into its stride in the second half of the year, culminating in some tripple-A releases which included Splinter Cell Double Agent, Rainbow Six Vegas, Call of Duty 3 and the daddy of them all, Gears of War.

But just what were the most played Xbox 360 games of the year? Microsoft has kindly released this information via Major Nelson, and unsurprisingly the most popular Xbox 360 title (based on unique gamertags) was Gears of War, followed by hard drive pack-in Hexic, Call of Duty 2, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter and Oblivion.

On the Arcade front, the top selling title was UNO, with places 2 through 10 taken by Street Figher II’ Hyper Fighting, Geometry Wars Evolved, Marble Blast Ultra, Pac-Man, DOOM, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Galaga, Gauntlet and Frogger.

Unsurprising, the top original Xbox game was Halo 2, a game which remained top of the Xbox Live chart until the release of Gears of War.
