The multiplayer medieval stab ‘n stab Mordhau has a number of new features in the works, including ranked modes, new maps, a profanity filter, and maybe modding.

Community manager Jax posted July’s Mordhau Development Update on the game’s official forums, revealing what the developers, Triternion, have planned for Mordhau’s future. Along with the new map, Crossroads, another two scenes are soon to roll out. Feitoria is closer to full release, and it’s a town and village focusing on verticality and bloody, crowded clustering in interiors. Castello is a castle keep, like Grad, but offers an involved experience in its portcullis control and walled courtyards.

Next on the agenda is a hotly-anticipated ranked mode. Players will earn ranks, ranging from Bronze to Elite, and look appropriately glitzy and ornate as they become better at poking a polearm indiscriminately at peasants. Additionally, an ‘Invasion’ mode is in development for applicability to all maps so far. It’s a 64-player attack-defend mode that will take advantage of sieging opportunities and progressive objectives.

The developer has also addressed toxicity in the player base, and taken steps to reduce and discourage this. Jax explains in the following: ‘A client-side chat filter is also in the works; while muting players removes anything they’ve said, you can only do that after they’ve said it. We plan on adding a filter that will automatically remove inappropriate or offensive messages before you have to see them, which will help to curb toxicity quite a bit.’
‘In terms of griefing, we’re looking into ways to easily identify placed structures and their team/owner, so it’s more apparent to see if a teammate is intentionally placing structures to disrupt gameplay, and who exactly is the one doing it. We’re also looking into other ways to prevent griefing with toolboxes and firepots, to prevent players having to rely on votekick to deal with them in the first place.’

Moreover, the team are reviewing the power disparity between those on horseback and those on Shanks' pony. Horse riders will become more vulnerable to infantrymen through momentum damage and fixing the desynced horse hitboxes, causing players to phase through the horse, as two examples. Fire bombs will become more forgiving, allowing players to hear the fire over ambient noise and only singe players if touched, rather than full-on torch them.

Modding support is considered by the developers, but for now they’re prioritising the main game and short-term content goals. The changes and future implementations for Mordhau are all very positive and surely point to a revitalised and balanced rendition of medieval siege warfare.
