Infinity Ward has detailed some of the adjustments and changes it’ll be making to the Modern Warfare 2 beta, following its first PlayStation exclusive weekend.

The changes were detailed in a blog post from the studio, praising a “fantastic amount of feedback on Reddit and social media, as well as a ton of stats collected on our side.”

As a result, the developers are of course making a lot of bug fixes – but there’s also been some tweaks to gameplay based on the feedback from the community – particularly when it comes to the mini-map.

Modern Warfare 2 beta – Weekend Two Changes

One controversial feature in this beta has been players only showing as red dots on the minimap when exposed by a UAV, and not when firing their weapons. IW say that this is intentional.

“The design reason for this,” they say, “is we do not want to punish players for firing their weapons. We also want players to actively search out the origin of a gunshot versus just travelling directly to where the dot is on the minimap.”

This won’t be changed for Weekend Two, the studio say, but they will continue to gather feedback.

Modern Warfare 2 beta Weekend Two changes – Footsteps, target tracking

Elsewhere, the team admitted footstep audio was very high – another common complaint in the beta. However, here they will be making some changes.

“We are reducing the range of footstep audio for various player movement states (jog, sprint and tactical sprint). This will help reduce the cost of moving around the map.”

In addition, IW say they’ll be making the difference between enemy and friendly footsteps more distinct, to help players distinguish friends from foes a little easier.

In fact, improving target tracking seems to be a key focus for Weekend Two, with IW promising more changes in UI and gameplay to make it easier to differentiate enemies from friends – and promise more info later this week.

Modern Warfare 2 beta Weekend Two changes – slide cancelling & perks

In other potential changes, IW claim that sentiment around the removal of slide-cancelling remains positive, but they’re aware of the new workaround.

However, at the time of writing – they’re yet to decide how they’ll address this for Weekend Two. For now, some other changes to slide movement are planned for launch to make the move feel more fluid.

Finally, the development team addressed the new Perk system. The system allows players to choose a perk loadout, at the start of a round. This then gets more powerful as more perks are unlocked as a match goes on.

The team say they’ve seen the various feedback on the new system both positive and negative. IW says it  feels the new system is a “nice shake up” – and will continue experimenting with the system in Weekend Two.

One of the ways it’ll do this is by drastically increasing the earn rate and seeing how players react. However, in addressing complaints about the Dead Silence perk, the studio said there are no changes currently planned for that.

The second weekend of the Modern Warfare 2 beta kicks off at 10am ET/6pm UK time on Thursday, September 22. It’ll include Xbox and PC players this time, as well as crossplay.
