Hitachi are working on new hard disk technology that looks set to make a big impact on mobile technology, despite its small size. The new tiny hard disks, which can store up to 60 GB on a drive only one-inch in size, use perpendicular recording rather than the longitudinal recording that is standard is hard disks today.

More and more mobile devices are now shipping with hard disks built in and this new technology could make devices smaller, yet make them capable of storing more data. While perpendicular recording technology is nothing new, it is only now that work has been done to make new devices that use the technology. With Microsoft rumoured to be dropping the hard disk on their next console due to size and cost concerns and gaming handhelds becoming increasingly more powerful, this small hard disk technology is bound to find its way into gaming devices in the future. Imagine a PSP with a 60 GB hard disk for movies and MP3s. It’s certainly a lot more attractive than multiple memory sticks.
