GTA V lead Leslie Benzies’ new studio Build A Rocket Boy has reportedly started layoffs following the release of the cinematic open-world game MindsEye.
MindsEye developer starts layoffs
Released two weeks ago on June 10, 2025, the game launched as a technical disaster with dismal console performance, countless bugs and crashing issues. While the developer has promised to improve the game with post-launch updates, alongside a huge roadmap of future additions, the game has not released in a good state.
With PlayStation offering refunds for the game and physical copies already finding their way into supermarket bargain bins, MindsEye developer Build A Rocket Boy has reportedly started layoffs at the company.
In a report by IGN, employees at the Scottish development studio have been informed that the layoffs “could affect over 100 employees” working on the game and the studio’s Everywhere project.
Build A Rocket Boy reportedly has around 300 employees working on the game with 200 of those workers remotely working outside of the United Kingdom.
Employees have said that the studio has started its 45-day consultation process, a UK requirement for laying off 100 or more employee redundancies during a 90-day or smaller period.
With the mass layoffs at the studio, it’s uncertain whether MindsEye will actually receive the post-launch support that has been promised to customers. Additionally, it’s not known how this will alter the continued development of Everywhere, the main project of Build A Rocket Boy of which MindsEye was only a part of.
An email to employees by co-CEO Mark Gerhard seen by IGN confirms that the studio is still “committed to MindsEye”. However, the game’s development has already seen a “shift from an intense development and launch phase to a sustainable post-launch support phase”. What that actually entails has not been explained.
Alongside low sales, MindsEye is a critical disaster with a low concurrent player count. As players complete the main campaign, the game’s extensive built-in creation tools are supposed to supplement the experience with fan-made missions. However, at the time of writing, we have only seen a dozen player-made missions hit the game’s content browser in the past two weeks.
