Rise of the Tomb Raider will feature microtransactions, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed.
The in-game purchases will allow players to buy a range of gameplay-modifying Expedition Cards that grant access to various boosts and bonus features, including a Big Head mode, to be used in modes outside of the main campaign.
Two different types of card will be available - Foil and Common - with about 300 available at next month's launch. More will be added "in the weeks that follow".
As reported yesterday, cards will be available to purchase in various packs of five from the Xbox Store, although prices have yet to be confirmed. You'll also be able to purchase card packs by spending Credits, an in-game currency earned by completing various challenges within the game.
"In Rise of the Tomb Raider, you'll earn credits by completing challenges and exploring the world," creative director Noah Hughes explained. "These credits can be used to purchase Expedition Card packs. When used, Expedition Cards become modifiers in game modes outside of the single player campaign. Some Cards are humorous, such as Big Head Mode, while others can increase the challenge or give you special advantages. Expedition Cards can also be purchased with real-world currency.
"There are two types of Expedition Cards: Foil and Common. A Foil Card will give Lara the strongest or strangest variations and can be used as many times as you wish. A Common Card is only used once, and you'll need to earn more credits to buy it back.
"Expedition Cards offer hundreds of ways to customize your Rise of the Tomb Raider experience," he continued. "You can also set up challenges for your friends to see if they can beat your scores with the same card setup. We'll have about 300 cards available at launch, and more will be added in the weeks that follow."
Four extra game modes will be included with the game at launch, in which Expedition Cards can presumably be used.
- Chapter Replay: Replay earlier chapters of the story. Complete challenges to earn credits.
- Chapter Replay Elite: Replay earlier chapters of the story with your upgraded skills and equipment and complete challenges to earn credits.
- Score Attack: Replay levels from the game with a new set of rules. Finish the level quickly for a time bonus. Chain together attacks, movements and collectibles to keep your multiplier high. Complete challenges and collect medals to earn credits!
- Remnant Resistance: Replay Hub spaces with a new set of goals. Craft your own missions by choosing the objectives, enemies and more. Once you've mastered the mission, challenge friends and the community to beat your high score or play other custom missions created by the community.
Confirmation of microtransactions follows yesterday's news that Rise of the Tomb Raider is to receive a Season Pass granting access to three major DLC drops, including a new tomb, a new Endurance Mode, and a "steady stream" of outfits, weapons and Expedition Cards.
Rise of the Tomb Raider launches on Xbox One and Xbox 360 on November 13. A release on PC and PS4 will follow in 2016.
