Microsoft has explained why it registered the domain, and it's not nearly as exciting as you might have imagined - it was just a defensive domain hold.

Frank X. Shaw, lead corporate communications for Microsoft posted on Twitter to clear up the situation.

"re: sony/ms domain names: Sony = great MS partner. No scoop here, this was just a defensive domain hold. Let's move on to weekend, kay? :)," he stated in the tweet.

So there you have it. Dreams of a joint Microsoft and Sony console are over. We can get back to rabid fanboyism again.
