Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 didn’t have the smoothest of launches, with massive backlash targeting locked 30FPS framerates a surprisingly low 1080p resolution.

Even Noriaki Okamura, who has worked on Metal Gear series since 1998 and is the Lead Producer on the series and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, apologised and admitted that Vol. 1 “wasn’t up to standards”. However, that’s no longer the case.

Metal Gear Solid masters its collection

The latest update looks to have addressed at least some of the resolution issues that fans were so angry about when the game launched. The 2.0 patch, which released on Steam in September but has only just landed on console, focuses on resolution and visual fidelity.

That means both Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater now have a new ‘Adjusted Mode’, which can be found on the new ‘Screen Settings’ tab in the game’s options menu. Gamers are now able to choose between an ‘Original’ mode, which runs the game at the 1080p resolution, and Adjusted, which applies internal image upscaling up to 4K, depending on your TV or monitor.

“Changing this setting will result in sharper visuals,” the devs state on the website.

It’s not all good news. The original Metal Gear Solid does not have this feature, plus it doesn’t work for all consoles. For example, the Nintendo Switch does not have the option to improve resolution, while those on the base PS4 will also be stuck with the old settings.

PS4 Pro does benefit from the patch, although, there’s no PS5 Pro support listed on the official website. We would assume, however, that Pro users will benefit from the update much like the base PS5.

Elsewhere, minor adjustments such as as being able to set in-game movies to higher resolution versions – again, only for MGS 2 and 3, are welcome, along with conroller settings now being accessible from the in-game menu (again, only for those two titles).

There’s still no release date yet for Delta, but actor David Hayter did pass on a rather touching message to fans as anticipation for its release grows.
