In returning to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Konami is reusing animations from the original game. However, thanks to the massive visual update available in Metal Gear Solid Delta, some fans have finally noticed Snake’s “funny” walk, but there’s actually a very good reason why the character moves that way.
Why does Snake walk like that?
If you’ve paid attention to the way Naked Snake walks in MGS 3, you’ll notice that his movement is actually rather stiff. This isn’t an animation issue, despite the game’s 20-year age. Instead, Snake walks this way on purpose, and it’s a movement style devised by professional soldiers.
Metal Gear Solid 3 was created with the advice of military veteran and SWAT trainer Motosada Mori. In fact, the game’s movement style and iconic CQC (close-quarters combat) were modelled after Mori’s training.
In the game, Snake’s movement is designed to be as quiet as possible as he sneaks through heavily wooded areas. This results in an admittedly “funny” looking walk where the soldier twists at the hips, but mostly keeps his torso as stiff as possible.
The stiffness of Snake’s walk isn’t an issue with aged animation as every movement in the game was motion captured by real actors. That walk cycle is accurate and effective, and you’ll see Snake moving in a way that keeps his centre of gravity stable as he traverses the environment.
Metal Gear Solid and attention to detail
Whether it’s how characters walk or discuss military equipment, Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear games always had an intense attention to detail. Even in the PS1 original, MGS games made sure everything felt as grounded as possible despite its more fantastical elements.
While Delta: Snake Eater technically isn’t “a Hideo Kojima game”, the one-to-one nature of this remake does mean that the director’s original care has been perfectly replicated.
