Konami is adding a number of gameplay tweaks to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. As well as a graphical overhaul, remastering the game in Unreal Engine 5, the team has implemented a handful of quality-of-life improvements designed to cater to today’s audience.

One such feature is the ability to pause cutscenes, which was not possible in the 2004 original. This means you’ll be able to take a break if you’re needing to escape during one of the game’s many lengthy dialogue or action cinematics. As someone who regards Snake Eater as one of the greatest games of all time, this is a welcome addition.

But that’s not all. There are also a number of other tweaks that continue to build on the narrative that this is far more than just a revamped copy and paste attempt. For example, Konami explained during their gameplay presentation at the Tokyo Game Show that Naked Snake’s camouflage will get damaged over time. This means that bullet holes, rips and tears will appear as you make your way through the playthrough. The camo also plays a much more dynamic role than it did in the last game, with real-time effectiveness influenced should you wade through water and mud. Roll through a muddy puddy and you’ll see your camo rating improve, before wearing off over time as it dries and the dirt falls off.

Elsewhere, the health bar has also been moved to the centre of the screen if you’re playing in the ‘New Style’ gameplay mode. Konami confirmed in ‘Legacy Mode’ the bar will remain to the left of the screen as per the original, and it’s possible for players to move it should they so wish. We’ve also highlighted more subtle improvements, such as the seamless gameplay-to-cutscene integration, demonstrated during the opening section when Naked Snake has to retrieve his backpack.

Pressure is mounting on Konami to confirm a release date for Delta, especially as the builds we are seeing look incredibly polished. They are also expected to drop a demo at some point, which we hope will be later this year.
