Metal Gear Solid Delta features new, impressive seamless gameplay-to-cutscene transitions not possible in the original

Konami is rightfully being watched very carefully by fans of the Metal Gear Series. After all, given the rough launch of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1, they have every right to be skeptical. However, each time I see more of the game, I leave that little bit more impressed. While many critics are citing the fact that Delta sticks very close to the original and argue that it doesn’t contain many new elements, the latest build of the game does reveal some welcome, new additions.

One such improvement is the seamless gameplay-to-cutscene integration, demonstrated during the opening section when Naked Snake has to retrieve his backpack. In the original game, you climb the tree, drop down and then the game ‘auto-pilots’ snake back to the trunk before kicking into a cutscene. In Delta, there is a smooth transition from the drop into a cinematic, with just the ever-so-slightest bit of interference between the two. It’s a wonderful addition that not only gives me huge confidence in how other parts of the game can be brought to life, but it successfully adds to the cinematic feel of the game. Now, this feature isn’t going to be enough to convert those who remain unimpressed with the remaster attempt, however, it’s a fantastic example of Konami really scrunitising the source material and leveraging the power of the current gen to bring Delta up to standards. They still have some work to do regarding the audio mixing, though, which feels ‘stuck on’, especially given how expressive the voice acting is compared with the subtle facial animations we’ve seen in Delta.

There’s still not a peep on the release date, so we’re likely going to see Delta at some point early in 2025. It does seem very close to completion, so we can expect to see some form of announcement at the end of the year.
