The Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console of all time, moving over 5 million units in its first month. NetEase’s Marvel Rivals is one of the most popular free-to-play multiplayer games ever. A combination of the two would be a match made in heaven, right?

Marvel Rivals devs still don’t have a Switch 2 dev kit

While NetEase is considering bringing Marvel Rivals to the Nintendo Switch 2, the team behind the constantly-updating free-to-play hero shooter still doesn’t have access to a Dev Kit for Nintendo’s handheld.

Speaking to VideoGamer, Marvel Rivals game director Guangyun Chen confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game is still under consideration at the studio. Until the team has access to an official Dev Kit for the Switch 2 hardware, a port cannot be made for the handheld.

“We are in the process of obtaining the development machine for NS2,” Chen confirmed to VideoGamer when asked if the new handheld was powerful enough to give players a great experience. “Once we have it, we will conduct a thorough evaluation and provide a response [on if the hardware is powerful enough to run Marvel Rivals]”

NetEase was in discussion with Nintendo back in February with the team “open” to bringing Rivals to the new handheld. However, according to Chen, the team still doesn’t have access to the hardware.

Additionally, NetEase also considered bringing the game to the original Switch handheld but it didn’t “provide a great experience for our gameplay”, producer Weicong Wu explained back in February.

Nintendo has been stingier than normal with Dev Kits for the Nintendo Switch 2 which is likely the reason why the new handheld has seen a few major third-party releases, like Cyberpunk 2077, but not a significant wave of software. More Dev Kits are currently rolling out to developers across the world, but porting games to new systems takes longer than some gamers would assume.

Marvel Rivals is a current-gen only multiplayer game, but the free-to-play hero shooter should be able to run on the new Nintendo handheld. With the game running decently on less powerful handhelds like the Steam Deck, a fully-functioning Switch 2 port should be possible when the team finally get their hands on the tools they need.
