The competitive landscape of Marvel Rivals has long been a hotbed for intense discussions among players and developers alike. Topics such as rigged matchmaking, loss queues, and the presence of cheaters dominate these conversations, fueling ongoing debates within the community. Currently, the community is debating the latest addition to the game: Chrono Shield Cards. Players are eager to explore how these new mechanics will transform gameplay dynamics and influence Elo rankings in competitive lobbies, particularly concerning throwers and cheaters.

Even with the developers’ assurances that these cards will remain exclusive to special events and not be sold, a rising tide of apprehension among players suggests that this could be a significant advantage for those who thrive on exploiting and smurfing in ranked matches. However, one player argued that this actually promotes throwing, a concern that has consistently ranked among the top issues in Marvel Rivals lobbies.

In a recent discussion, Marvel Rivals executive producer Danny Koo highlighted the existing option to report players for throwing under Negative Behavior. However, he believes that the penalties for such actions should be more severe, as they undermine the efforts of teammates striving to ascend the ranks.

Marvel Rivals Executive Producer is open to introduce harsher penalties for throwing players in ranked lobbies

Danny Koo, Executive Producer of Marvel Rivals, recently addressed issues, noting the community’s frustration and suggesting that stronger punishments for throwers and leavers are being considered to maintain the integrity of ranked play.

The criticism originates from a recent update related to the Galacta’s Gift event, which allows players to collect Chrono Shield cards by completing event-based activities. These cards provide immunity from rank loss following a defeat, a mechanic that was originally intended to alleviate the blow of failure but has since been criticized for potentially aiding throwers and anger quitters. Previously, Chrono Shields were gained progressively through losses, which provided some accountability. The new method, however, enables rapid access, sparking concerns that players will use it to avoid consequences while disrupting competitive matches.

Koo responded to fan backlash, saying, “With or without [Chrono Shields], there will be throwers.” He stressed the existing in-game reporting mechanism while admitting that tougher steps may be required to prevent disruptive behavior. While Koo brushed down worries about Chrono Shields explicitly encouraging throwing, he further commented, “I think there should be a harsher penalty for throwers for sure. It all stemmed from either they can’t pick their banned characters, blaming teammates, or join in to throw because someone else is throwing. Many facets contribute to it, including egos. Requires further discussions.”

As Marvel Rivals grows, it is vital to strike a balance between accessibility and fair competition. Koo’s acknowledgement of heavier penalties demonstrates a commitment to addressing throwers, but the community expects meaningful action to ensure that ranked play remains a rewarding experience for dedicated players.
