Hybrid AR kart racing game Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit just received a surprise free update just over a year since it originally launched.

The 2.0 update brings a host of new multiplayer modes to the game. Perhaps most radical is the addition of split-screen multiplayer. This means you no longer need two Nintendo Switch consoles to play against friends, although it’s probably best to use this mode while your Switch is connected to the TV.

In addition, the update also adds a new relay mode to the game. This allows players to take it in turns to race around their tracks with the remote control cars. After each lap, you can hand your console to your friend and they can try and beat your lap time around the same course. This update also includes a brand new Luigi Cup with three new course themes to use when building your tracks.

If you missed it, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit brings the popular racer into your living room. While the software is free, you’ll need to buy the special Mario or Luigi remote control cars that have a camera on top, as well as some cardboard track pieces you can set around your home to mark out the course.

Check out a video for the 2.0 update for yourself below. The free update is available to download now for Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
