Team17 & Small Impact Games have announced Marauders, a multiplayer ‘dieselpunk’ shooter coming to early access on PC later this year.

The game is set in an alternate universe version of the early 1990s. You and your friends will step into the boots of a band of roving space pirates, exploring hostile spaceships with the hope of scoring big. Treasure and of course weapons are up for grabs, as you battle both AI and human opponents alike. If you manage to make it out alive, you can use your haul in subsequent matches.

We’re as far as we can get from the colourful world of the looter shooter genre’s most famous example, Borderlands. Instead, we’re told to expect a gritty sci-fi world with Earth on the brink of collapse. Gear will be persistent, and you’ll also be able to use XP to unlock new items. This includes mods that can be applied to your existing gear to give it a boost. You’ll also be able to upgrade your ship to help you make a clean getaway or even steal your opponents through dogfights.

The game supports both solo play or you can squad up with up to three other players. The game’s set to get a closed alpha soon, which you can get in on via a pre-order. Otherwise, Marauders will launch in early access on Steam for PC and via PC Game Pass later this year.
