Mafia 3 launched overnight and things didn’t go to plan, at least on Steam where the game has received a mostly negative reception. At the time of writing 906 of the game’s 1676 reviews are negative.

The major issue for Steam players is 2K’s decision to implement a 30 frames per second cap. However, other issues such as crashing, control problems and incorrect implementation of 21:9 display support have also been reported.

Thankfully, 2K has said it aims to roll out a game update to address the issues as soon as this weekend.

“We know how important having options that best suit your PC’s performance capabilities are. The team has been hard at work ensuring that Mafia III’s performance is consistent across all platforms, and right now the game runs at a solid 30 frames-per-second,” explained the blog post.

“We currently have a patch running here at the studio that includes 30, 60, and unlimited frames-per-second options in the video menu, among other improvements for the PC version of Mafia III.

“We’re verifying the patch now to ensure everything is working as expected. If everything goes well, we expect the update to go live this weekend. We will be keeping the PC community up-to-date on the status of the patch throughout the weekend and thank you for all the feedback!”

Mafia 3 certainly appeared to be on the path to success after early showings impressed, but that feeling of positivity has recently started to turn sour, not least because press were not allowed access to review the game ahead of launch. Obviously this doesn’t directly translate into Mafia 3 being a bad game, but it does introduce an element of doubt into the minds of those thinking about buying the game.
