One of the most iconic video games of all time is finally getting the movie treatment with Warner Bros’ A Minecraft Movie. Properly revealed in the flick’s first official trailer, the live-action Minecraft film is actually rather horrifying.
A Minecraft Movie trailer
Surprise released onto YouTube and social media, Warner Bros’ Minecraft movie trailer is extremely weird. Taking the Jumanji approach, the film brings Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Eugene Hansen into the block-based world of Mojang’s survival game.
In the trailer, the four main actors are thrust into an entirely CGI world complete with horrific Hollywood versions of the game’s iconic mobs. In a bid to add more realism to the CG visuals, Minecraft’s adorable voxel pigs and villainous pigmen now have nightmarish fleshy skin alongside their cubic forms.
In its movie visuals, Minecraft is surprisingly nightmarish. As it errs more realistic than the simple cubes of the video game, something is lost. Instead of a movie version of the iconic game, it’s almost like a fever dream of Mojang’s billion-dollar survival game.
However, not all is completely lost in the translation to this movie adaptation. In its realistic shift, the iconic Creeper is now mossy, almost fuzzy. Despite everything, this one alternated look is definitely the most enjoyable.
Jack Black as Steve
Alongside the four main characters, Jack Black does make his debut as the iconic Minecraft Steve. Instead of being a blocky boy, Black’s version of the character is simply himself in a blue t-shirt, taking on the cliched role of the first human to be trapped in this alternate universe.
According to the trailer’s description, Steve and the other four will “reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world”. Wait a minute, that sounds just like the Jumanji reboot!
A Minecraft Movie releases in theatres on April 4, 2025.
