A new Resident Evil strategy game is in development, a unique spin-off in the long-running survival horror game. If that wasn’t surprising enough, what about the fact that the project is being handled by Kingdom Hearts co-creator Shinji Hashimoto?
Resident Evil Survival Unit announced
Teased after the recent reveal of Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game in the series that will bring players back to Raccoon City, Residdent Evil Survival Unit is currently in development by studios Joycity and Aniplex in collaboration with Capcom.
Few details have been revealed for the upcoming strategy game, although the title will be released first on mobile devices. Capcom will reveal more about the upcoming mobile game on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at 10 PM UTC/11 PM UK/6 PM ET. (Thanks, VGC.)
From the single image available for the project, it seems that Survival Unit will involve the ever-present Umbrella Corporation in some degree. (The original, not New Umbrella) As a mobile-first project, we would expect some gacha elements as well, brining in characters from across the franchise’s history, but that’s not confirmed.
Resident Evil has been in one hell of a resurgence since the release of RE7 back in 2016. However, while mainline entries have continued to sell gangbusters, the series’ spin-offs have not performed very well at all despite Capcom putting a lot of money into them.
Resident Evil: Resistance, the PvE multiplayer spin-off bundled with the remake of the RE3, failed to catch on. Additionally, RE:Verse, the PvP spin-off including with RE8, aka Village, has officially shut down just a few years after launch.
While Survival Unit may not be the type of spin-off many fans will be happy with, especially considering its mobile origins, it is interesting to see Capcom continue to experiment with the series. After all, this experimentation has brought us truly heinous games like Survivor on PS1 as well as Revelations and Outbreak.
